How Much Does Motorhome Insurance Cost?

It’s time to get away and with a motorhome sitting on the driveway waiting for its next adventure, why not get out on the road and explore? That sounds great until you realise you haven’t yet secured motorhome insurance. Luckily, it is not too expensive and could cost you as little as £350 for the year. That’s approximately £100 less than the UK average for car insurance. So not only is it a little cheaper than what you may pay for your car, but it’s for a vehicle that doubles up as a temporary home for a while too!
It’s worth remembering that the figure we supplied above is just an average though, and certain motorhomes, as well as how you keep it safe will play a large part in determining the total for your motorhome insurance.
Why do you need motorhome insurance?
Just like any other form of insurance, motorhome insurance protects you from costly surprises that may be lurking around the corner should an accident, a theft or a breakdown occur.
Protecting you from the high costs, motorhome insurance is essential to ensure your trip is less stressful and more fun. Without the worry of a huge bill looming overhead, you can remain confident your motorhome experience will continue just as you had hoped. There will, of course, be an amount for you to pay towards the repair or to replace the lost or stolen items but with motorhome insurance, it will be considerably less.
Is it a legal requirement to have motorhome insurance?
Yes, and you’ll need at least third-party motorhome insurance to be allowed to have it on the road. Third-party motorhome insurance is the most basic level of insurance but at least it’ll offer some form of protection!
What are the types of motorhome insurance?
Just like with car insurance, there are a host of motorhome insurance options available. Each one offers slightly different levels of coverage from the other. You should look at the policy details before committing as you could find that one policy isn’t comprehensive enough, but another offers cover that isn’t suitable and costs much more than the others.
Third-Party Only motorhome insurance
The most common form of insurance and perhaps the most affordable motorhome insurance. It would be advised to take third party-only insurance if you only use your motorhome on rare occasions as it’ll ensure you have the minimum coverage the law requires.
Third-party only motorhome insurance will cover third parties who suffer injuries or damage to their motorhome. It won’t cover your motorhome or belongings though, meaning that whilst you’ve saved on costs for the injured parties and their vehicle, you’ll still have to pay out for yours.
Third-party fire and theft
The next level up from third-party only, the third-party fire and theft coverage sees a slight price increase but also a degree of added protection. This protection comes in the form of coverage against loss due to fire or theft.
Comprehensive motorhome insurance
This is the full package and offers an in-depth level of insurance for motorhomes. With a higher price point than the others, it offers everything both third-party options cover but with the added knowledge that your motorhome is also covered even if you are the one at fault. This full protection can be detailed and as a result, costs a lot more than the other two options but in many cases, packages can be tailor-made to your needs. You can add breakdown cover and misfuelling cover for example.
How is the cost of motorhome insurance worked out?
Your chosen insurer will want to take into account a few things before providing you with a quote and these things can vastly increase or decrease the amount you need to pay for your motorhome insurance.
Firstly, they will look at what type of coverage you are interested in. It may well emerge that as you work through obtaining a quote, a different policy may be more suitable.
The insurer will want to know:
- The make and model of motorhome you have. Specific models are more complex or luxurious than others and this could see insurance quotes rise. They will also factor in how much it costs to repair such a vehicle. A budget model for example will have cheaper parts than a high-end model.
- The age of the motorhome. If the motorhome is old, it may be more prone to problems. This could see higher premiums. However, the older the vehicle, the cheaper it tends to be to insure it. A similar outlook can be made for more expensive motorhomes. Something that costs a lot to purchase will cost more to insure, but its reliability will be much better than that of an old motorhome. This could see the price come in cheaper than you’d expect.
- The size of the motorhome. A large motorhome may be considered more of a risk by the insurers as it may be more likely it is involved in an accident.
- The safety features of the motorhome. If the motorhome has an alarm, cameras, or any form of tracking device, the insurers will look upon it more favourably. As you are putting measures in place to minimise the risk of theft and record important evidence should there be an incident, you could see premiums come down.
- How your motorhome is stored. Parking a motorhome in an open space where thieves could easily get to it, or on a road where an accident can occur will see your insurance cost much more than if your vehicle was secured in a garage or on a gated driveway.
- All about you. Your age, your experience and your driving record are essential. If you have a history of driving offences or accidents, insurance will cost much more than someone with no claim history and a clean licence. How you handle driving a motorhome will also be taken into account as it’s vastly different to a car.
How can I reduce my motorhome insurance?
With an average cost of close to £400 and some policies costing way more, it makes sense to look for ways to reduce your bill. A few simple steps can see the premium tumble. Here’s what you can do:
- Get quotes from a variety of providers and assess them. You could find some offer much more for much less.
- If you are an infrequent user of the motorhome, consider a low mileage policy.
- Keep your motorhome stored safely. If it’s locked away, it’s at less risk. Less risk means cheaper premiums!
- Add an alarm, an immobiliser, and any other relevant security features and the insurer will see you are trying your best to reduce theft risk. This will give them more of a reason to offer you a cheaper deal.
- Consider a higher excess and the provider will lower the premium.
Is motorhome insurance more expensive with additional drivers?
Yes. We looked at data from Nimblefins and saw that their research indicates where a policy may cost £307 per year for one driver, it could leap to £374 if there were four drivers on the policy. In most cases, four drivers would be the maximum you can add, but some insurers can allow as many as six!
Can I drive a motorhome on my car insurance?
No, a motorhome is a completely different vehicle from a car. It is a legal requirement to secure an insurance policy for your motorhome so you should obtain a quote as soon as you can and before you drive it.
