10 of The Best Used Cars with No Tax

If there is an opportunity to save money, most of us are likely to take it, especially when it comes to not needing to pay tax.

With electric cars gradually taking up more space in the market, they are currently the only type of car you can buy without also having to pay any tax. However, this is only valid if the car costs less than £40,000.

Prior to the change introduced by the government in 2017, there were a selection of cars available for purchase without the additional cost of tax. Today, however, every vehicle comes with a tax bill (excluding electric cars under £40,000), unless you find a pre-2017 vehicle on the used car market.

Let’s take a look at the ten best used cars that won’t see you having to pay any road tax.

Peugeot 108

Always a favourite amongst those looking to secure car finance for young drivers, the Peugeot 108 (available in both a 1.0 and 1.2 litre engine) provides drivers with a city car that gives you more than you would expect. This car is cheap to run, looks great and has that added bonus of no tax.

Vauxhall Astra

Vauxhall have long been associated with quality vehicles, and their range covers all the requirements of today’s drivers. Picking an Astra up with a turbo charged 1 litre engine is a great option. However, for a car with more of a kick, the economical 1.6 litre CDTi emits so few fumes that it doesn’t require any tax. With 108 BHP, too, this isn’t one to ignore when looking for a handy car to get you around town.

Ford Fiesta

An all-time icon of British motoring, the Ford Fiesta has been helping us get from A-Z since 1972. Easy to drive, stylish and extremely efficient, this car that is perfect for first time drivers or those looking to save some cash. The 1 litre EcoBoost engine is turbo charged, giving you more of a push and boasting 65 MPG.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

A touch of Italian flair never goes amiss on the road, and with the Giulietta, the Alfa Romeo team have created something special. Elements of F1 technology, whilst sticking to the basics of road driving, make this a great car for families. Pick the 1.6 litre JTDM engine to avoid paying road tax, and benefit from 74.3 MPG.

Kia Picanto

This model often features on lists for perfect first cars and affordable vehicles. A lack of power compared to other models may be a disadvantage some, but incredibly attractive price points, great reliability and economical driving make the Kia a fantastic choice for a new driver. To get the benefit of zero tax, shop around for the 1 litre engine that gives you 78 MPG, or 67 MPG when on a combined cycle.

Volkswagen Golf

The Golf is similar to the Fiesta or the 108, often sought after as a first car. Reliable, affordable and attractive, it is no wonder it is popular choice. With so many models in the Golf range, you are spoilt for choice, but to ensure you aren’t paying tax, opt for the 1.6 litre TDi with 108 BHP.

Citroen C4 Cactus

You might have seen these cars frequenting the roads but know little about them. The side door protection has made the C4 Cactus almost as iconic as some of the other vehicles in our list. Pick up the 1.2 litre petrol version, an automatic model with a very high fuel economy.

Suzuki Swift

Swift by name and swift in nature, this car is surprisingly quick and a great all-rounder. Extremely durable and with incredible fuel economy, it is becoming a first pick for many. A DualJet model may cost a little more but investing in this model will save you the cost of road tax.

Ford Focus

The second Ford entry on our list is another of those cars drivers simply love. The Focus has remained popular throughout its evolution, and has embraced change to keep in among the front runners of popular road cars. There is one version of the Focus that keeps you away from the tax man, and that is the Style Trim. This may fall towards the bottom of the range for Focuses without the extra tech features, but you will again be saving on road tax by purchasing one.

Nissan Qashqai

An SUV that has been at the top of wish lists due to its low cost, great reliability and fantastic fuel economy, the Qashqai is always in demand. Pick up a 1.5 litre dCi to avoid tax and cut down on your carbon footprint. They look good, are great for the family and certainly keep cash in your pocket when you need it most.
